A Rolex represents an investment in precision timing and beauty. Fortunately, maintenance of a Rolex watch is not difficult at all. In fact, simply using the watch keeps the internal functions running properly and proper cleaning will keep the exterior looking beautiful and elegant.
Wear Your Rolex Regularly
Lubricants within your watch are designed to flow effectively with the natural movements of your arm as you go about the normal activities of your day. The movements maintain the natural viscosity of the lubricants—they keep the liquid from thickening too much to be useful, in much the same way that running an engine makes engine oil last longer than if it just sits. If you wear your Rolex every day, you’ll keep the gears lubricated and keep things running well.
If your Rolex sits for a long time, the lubricant can thicken and even harden, which will increase the friction between the moving parts and could eventually cause damage to the functionality. If you’re not going to wear your Rolex regularly, you should wind it at least once or twice per week in order to keep the gears lubricated and functioning properly.
Keep Your Rolex Clean
Cleaning a Rolex is easier than you might think, but it should be done carefully. You’ll be using your hands for the most part, so before you begin wash your hands thoroughly to remove any dirt or oils. Next, make sure the winding crown is screwed tightly against the case. You’ll be submerging the watch, so you don’t want any water to get inside.
Rinse your Rolex in lukewarm water and then set it aside. Prepare a bowl of water mixed with mild soap. The water should again be lukewarm and the soap should be ammonia free. Use your hands to apply the soapy water and clean off the watch. You can use a soft-bristled toothbrush to scrub away any dirt, submerging the watch and the toothbrush for short amounts of time as you do.
When you watch is clean, pat it dry with a soft cloth. You can also use a blow dryer to get rid of moisture between the links.
