Which Gold Buyers Make The Most Sense?

Updated: Sep 28

Gold Selling to a San Diego Gold Buyer

If you have gold or gold jewelry you’d like to sell, there are a number of choices available to you. You may respond to one of the many bus stop signs or billboards advertising quick money. Maybe you’ve seen some of the suddenly appearing gold buying stores in mini malls. Maybe you’ve seen the advertisements in online classifieds or on late night television.

It seems like everyone wants your “unwanted” gold!

Unless you happen to live near a refinery, it’s usually not a good idea to sell gold to any of those places. They make their money by selling to refineries and they typically pay far less than the gold is worth in order to cover their overhead. Those businesses exist because their customers don’t understand the value of what they’re selling or, in very rare cases, choose immediate convenience over more money.

So what choices are there?

If you have jewelry and gold you’d like to sell, you could bring it to a pawn shop. This is, in most cases, much better than one of those gold buyers. A pawn broker is very likely going to have a great deal more experience with precious metals than an employee at one of those places. In addition, if your gold isn’t “unwanted” but you’re facing financial difficulties, you might be able to get a loan on your gold rather than a straight sale. Pawn brokers are also licensed and established. They have ties to their communities and customers that go well beyond the limited scope of buying and selling precious metals. A pawn shop is a much better choice than a fly by night gold buyer.

Your best choice, though, is always going to be a jeweler. Jewelers are more likely to buy your jewelry as jewelry and not just for the precious metals. A pawn broker might pay you an amount for the value of your gold while a jeweler might pay you more because the item will end up for sale in the vintage section of the shop. In addition, a jeweler is more likely to understand the value of any precious gems. A reputable jeweler is, in almost every case, going to give you a better deal than a reputable pawn broker.
