If you have some jewelry that you no longer wear or perhaps never did, you might be thinking about how to turn the items you have into cash. Gold and platinum jewelry always has value and can usually be resold without too much difficulty (although not always for a price that makes you happy.) The same goes for diamond jewelry. I got an interesting question at my showroom the other day. A customer who’d just inherited a number of items asked me if there was a time of year when it was best for him to sell it. I thought you might like to know the answer I gave him.
If you want to sell your jewelry to a private party, you should sell at the same times that jewelry stores like Bert Levi Family Jewelers are busiest. That’s Valentines Day, Mother’s Day, and Christmastime. That’s when people who might want to buy your items are most likely to buy. So, you could list the jewelry online at the different auction or sales sites a month or two ahead of then. You could also put ads in newspaper or online classifieds.
If you want to get your money faster and you don’t want to go through the work of selling directly to individuals, it’s a little different. First and foremost, you can get cash instantly at one of those pop up gold stores. You’ll just get far less than you otherwise could. It just doesn’t matter about the time of year with them. At any time, they’ll pay their pittance for your gold. (Wow, I just can’t hold back my irritation when it comes to those places, can I?)
Pawn shops are a little different. They will, for the most part, buy your jewelry at any time. Depending on your items, they may buy them based only on the spot gold price (or platinum or silver) but you won’t in general have difficulty selling. If your jewelry is worth a very substantial amount of money, they may not be able to manage an instant sale. Pawn shops are far better than gold buying stores but keep in mind jewelry is not their primary business. They’ll pay more but the ability to appraise jewelry value varies widely from shop to shop.
If you sell to a jeweler, you can sell any time of year. However, I’ll give you a secret. Selling close to the big business times of year will get you more money. Why is that? If you have a lovely gold heart necklace with diamonds and you bring it to me in January, I know I’m likely to have it sold when February 14th rolls around. I can pay more when I can be confident I’ll get my investment back sooner. I can certainly pay more than I would if you brought it to me in the beginning of June.
I hope this helps if you’ll looking to sell gold and diamonds. If you want to sell jewelry in San Diego, I hope you’ll give us a call or drop in to the La Jolla showroom. We’re committed to treating you right, and I can promise you that you’ll be happy you stopped by.
