You get this question a lot, actually. I mean anyone involved in selling pre-owned Rolexes gets it a lot. And of course, there are always the people who feel a need to throw in Patek Phillipe, Audemars Piguet, and Breitling. Most people think Rolex is the top selling luxury watch brand in the world (which is true) and Omega is the second bestselling brand in the world, which is not true. Omega actually ranks behind Cartier and is third.
To give you an idea of the difference in their popularity, Rolex commands thirty percent of the luxury watch market. Omega commands less than a quarter of that share. The fact that Omega’s seven percent still puts them at number three tells you how many players there are. As for Cartier, it’s at eight percent. Rolex is more than three times as popular as second place.
Okay, so we know which is more popular now. But which is better.
It all comes down to preference, really. Omega and Rolex are both highly regarded luxury watch brands that are known for their quality, craftsmanship, and innovation. The choice between the two comes down to your personal sense of style. Both brands produce very high-quality watches. Both focus on innovation and both are leaders when it comes to advancement of timekeeping technology.
There’s really no hard, fast way to determine who’s better. You can certainly take certain statistics and put Rolex ahead or other statistics and put Omega ahead. Ultimately, though, most of those statistics interest nobody other than horologists. Let me put it this way, if you’re not a professional diver (and ninety-nine percent of people who buy diving watches like the Seamaster and the Submariner are not) does it really matter if one watch is resistant to a depth a hundred feet deeper? Does it matter than one will last fifty-five hours and the other will only last eight?
Here’s a consideration that affects most people. It likely affects you. You can get an Omega for about half the cost of a Rolex or even less that that. However, in five years, your Rolex is very likely to have a resale price of close to the same as the original purchase price and often more. Your Omega will have lost a great deal of value. That’s what the brand recognition and popularity does. I know this seems like a non-answer. Maybe you’re a watch enthusiast searching for argument ammunition. Well, all I can say is that the watches are about equal quality but the Rolex holds value. It’s a generalization, sure, but it’s true.
