What Do Matching Engagement Rings and Wedding Bands Symbolize?

While matching wedding bands are traditional, some couples choose to have bands with individual designs. When deciding between matching or contrasting bands, advice is usually given to consider your personal style, lifestyle, and how you want your rings to reflect your relationship. Matching the bands is one way to symbolize a couple's commitment to each other.

However, there is another way to symbolize a couple’s unity of purpose and the eternal nature of their love. That’s matching the engagement ring to the partner’s wedding band. Traditionally, the engagement ring symbolizes a couple's decision to marry and the hope for their shared future. The ring symbolizes the seriousness of the commitment as well the intention to live up to that commitment.

Wedding bands signify something subtly different. A wedding band symbolizes the vows exchanged during the wedding ceremony. So, the engagement ring symbolizes the agreement to make vows while the wedding bands symbolize the vows themselves. This has typically resulted in wedding bands that are essentially plain and engagement rings that are over-the-top beautiful. One of the reasons for this is simply that the engagement ring design is almost always handled by the one making the proposal. It’s reasonable to want an impressive ring, right?

The problem is that in a typical situation, the partner receiving the proposal is surprised. That partner doesn’t get as much of an opportunity to be involved in the engagement ring. But there is absolutely an ability to get involved in the wedding bands, and there are ways to match them up. You can pave-set gems to match the engagement ring gem. You can match metals. You can match meaning as well. For example, yellow gold symbolizes fidelity and so do yellow diamonds. You can also use blue sapphires to symbolize protection or titanium. So, the matching can be simply thematic with one ring having the gem and one the metal.
