A clarity enhanced diamond has been treated to improve its visual appearance. You’ve heard of the Four C’s. Clarity is one of the them. It measures how the flaws in a diamond. Flaws can impact the way a diamond reflects light, making the diamond less brilliant and beautiful. There are two kinds of flaws. There are occlusions, which are on the outside of a diamond and inclusions on the inside. Clarity enhancement uses different technological methods to improve the clarity.
Treatment for clarity enhanced diamonds often involves the use of laser technology. Other methods are also used to remove inclusions or fill in cavities in the stone. The treatment makes the diamond more visually appealing and can make it sparkle like a higher quality diamond. Since clarity enhanced diamonds are less expensive than untreated diamonds of the same quality, they’re growing in popularity. The cost savings also makes it easier for buyers to afford a larger diamond.
Not everyone thinks the technology is a good thing. In fact, it’s illegal in most countries to sell an enhanced diamond without disclosing that it has been treated. Many believe clarity enhanced diamonds are not a good choice for engagement rings or other diamond jewelry because the treatment can impact the diamond's durability and value.
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) argues that laser drilling results in tunnels that can compromise the diamond's durability. You certainly can’t argue with the qualifications of the Gemological Institute of America. That’s the organization that came up with the Four C’s in the first place!
Does it make sense to buy a clarity enhanced diamond? That’s really a question you have to answer for yourself. One thing is certain, though. If you buy a diamond that has undergone treatment, you need to know what you’re buying.
