Wearing Your Rolex: How Loose or Tight?

Rolex GMT-Master Watch

Here’s the short answer. Wear your Rolex however you want to wear it. It’s your watch. You’re entitled to enjoy it the way you want to enjoy it. There is no right or wrong way. It’s that simple. Enjoy your watch. That’s what it’s for.

Having said that, there are two things to consider, and please keep in mind this post is geared toward wearing a Rolex with a metal bracelet and not with a strap.

- First off, if you wear your Rolex too loosely, it causes premature wear. This is because the bracelet will bend and move back and forth in a way that stresses the links and the pins. You won’t notice this in a few days or even a few months but it will have a very large effect over time. But…

- If you wear your Rolex too tightly, it causes premature wear. If you wear it too tightly, every movement puts pressure on the links. This pressure also stretches the links and the pins. In the case of a loose wear, it’s the jostling about that causes problems. In the case of a tight wear, it’s the constant pressure on the bracelet.

Rolex recommends you have it loose enough to move it slightly on the wrist but tight enough that it can’t be spun around or even brought completely off center.

At the end of the day, the decision is yours. There will be wear on a bracelet no matter what. If you enjoy your watch for years but have to service or replace the bracelet every now and then, that seems better than not really enjoying your watch for years and not having to replace it.
