Two Good Choices for a First Time Rolex Buyer

Updated: Sep 28

The truth of the matter is that if you ask two people what the best Rolex is for a brand-new Rolex buyer, you’ll get three opinions. Not only that but you’re very likely to discover that people are very, very set in those opinions as well. Keep in mind that the watch’s bracelet (or band) will be wrapped around your wrist and nobody else’s. You pick the watch that works for you. With that in mind, here are a few great choices for the first fine Swiss mechanical watch you might wear.

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Makes a Great First Rolex

This is a popular choice, and there’s no wonder. It was first marketed in 1926, and it’s no exaggeration to say it set the standard for innovation from the beginning. Oyster. That’s in the name because the waterproof watch case was inspired by an oyster’s shell. Waterproof watchmaking is only the beginning. Rolex’s “perpetual” technology is the self-winding mechanism that revolutionized the industry.

The Oyster Perpetual is available at many price ranges on the pre-owned Rolex market. In addition, new models have vibrant dial colors and often sell at prices well above retail even for an unworn watch. Whether you’re looking for a Rolex with a relatively small investment or one that takes a significant investment, Rolex Oyster Perpetual might be perfect for you.

The Rolex Explorer and Explorer II Make Great First Rolexes

Unlike the Oyster Perpetual, the Explorer (or Explorer II) is a sports watch. The Explorer doesn’t have a rotating bezel or a date display. In fact, it is a standard watch telling time only. Until recently, the watch was also produced only in stainless steel and that kept the entry level price very attractive. Even so, the Explorer II is a smaller investment than most Rolexes and includes a bezel as well as date and time zone functionality.

Both the Explorer and Explorer II give you an opportunity to own a new Rolex but without a dramatic investment. Either makes for a very good first Rolex. If you’re in the market for a first Rolex, you have a great many choices. You can’t go wrong with an Oyster Perpetual or an Explorer.
