At Bert Levi Family Jewelers, we know that all people fall in love and not just the ultra-rich. That’s why we’ve dedicated our business to helping people in all economic circumstances to get a truly lovely engagement ring. Here are some tips I’ve learned over the years as a third generation jeweler.
Determine Your Budget Before You Shop
There are some purchases where you might start shopping and exploring before you get around figuring out a budget. That can be very unwise when it comes to engagement rings. It’s easy to fall in love with a ring or to assume certain things are necessary or definite. If you talk to the wrong jeweler, you’ll think you need a center diamond and then diamonds covering every other bit of metal on the ring. Make your budget first. Ignore the whole three months salary idea and think about what you could save over the next several months until you propose. Make a reasonable budget and remember upgrading an engagement ring is a fantastic anniversary gift when you’re in a better financial situation down the line.
Think Beyond the Diamond Mine
Most of the expense of a diamond engagement ring is the diamond. Many people opt for a different gem. You can save a great deal with a beautiful blue or yellow sapphire or a lovely red ruby. An even easier tip is to buy a lab grown diamond. They are exactly the same as earth-mined diamonds. Exactly. What do they lack? Any destruction of the environment a mind creates and any chance at all of being a “blood diamond” conflict diamond. Lab mined diamonds are not only less expensive but they give you a guarantee about certain ethical considerations.
Get Educated
Did you know slight changes in your diamond can have dramatic affects on cost? A 0.9 carat diamond, for example, is very substantially less expensive that a 1.0 carat diamond despite that being an unnoticeable difference. That goes for almost all the four C’s. Slight changes make the cost go down. Take the time to learn about different kinds of settings, too. The most famous setting is the Tiffany Setting, and it’s completely no-frills. Can’t go wrong with that, right?
