Three Ways to Make an Engagement Ring Fit Your Budget

At Bert Levi Family Jewelers, we have a pretty simple philosophy. We believe that love isn’t limited to the wealthy. People in all economic circumstances fall in love. We think that since people of all economic circumstances fall in love and get engaged, people in all economic circumstances are entitled to have a beautiful engagement ring.

Although there is a constant barrage of advertising trying to get people to spend more on diamonds and rings, don’t fall for it. The size of the diamond or the design of the ring doesn’t measure the size of your love! Here are some tips to help blow your partner away instead of blowing away your savings.

1. Know What You Can Spend

If you’re going to buy an engagement ring, you have to come up with a budget. Let’s say right now that the budget is not three months’ salary. That’s an advertising slogan, nothing more. Chances are that three months’ salary would go a long way toward helping you get a down payment on a home. Figure out a comfortable number that you can manage. Avoid going into debt. You should be able to pay for the ring with money you’ve already saved. If not, save for a while longer.

2. Buy Your Engagement Ring Diamond Intelligently

Did you know a tenth of a carat can save you a great deal of money. Seriously, a 0.90 carat diamond can cost twenty-five percent (or more) less than a one carat diamond. You won’t even be able to see the difference on the ring! The same goes with clarity and color. In most cases, differences in clarity or color are impossible for the naked eye to see. Why spend more because of what the certification certificate says? Will your partner be smiling and showing all your friends the certificate or the ring?

3. Buy a Vintage Engagement Ring

A vintage ring is often a better deal than a new ring. Vintage rings have character and old-world timelessness. If you have a boho lifestyle, it makes a lot of sense. If your partner enjoys vintage clothing, vintage décor; why not complete the picture. Buying vintage often saves not only money but time. While jewelers will try to add services and design changes to new rings in order to increase the sale price, with most vintage rings, you’re only going to have to worry about sizing.

There are a great many other ways to save money on your engagement ring. If you’re ready to move ahead, reach out and let us see if we can help you. If you’re looking for an engagement ring in San Diego, drop by our showroom to say hello. You’ll be glad you did.
