Take care of your engagement ring. Regular jewelry maintenance is important for a number of reasons. First of all, it’s necessary to preserve value. Jewelry is made from precious materials. These help an item appreciate in value over time, but jewelry can also depreciate if it's not properly maintained. The first reason to maintain your jewelry is simple. It involved a substantial investment and you ought to protect the investment!

It’s also important to maintain your jewelry to keep is safe. A setting with no gem can cut someone. A sharp edge on the inside of a ring can cause injury, too. Dirt and bacteria buildup on jewelry can cause skin irritations, especially for people with sensitive skin. These aren’t things we ordinarily think about but they’re important considerations.

When you keep up with maintenance, you can get ahead of problems. Regular cleaning, for example, can help you detect any damage or excessive wear and tear that could compromise the security of your jewelry. You can notice the loose prong before you lose a diamond! This can help you extend the life of your jewelry so it will last for years to come.

Here are some tips for maintaining your jewelry:

Inspect your jewelry regularly. Check your jewelry regularly to make sure no stones are loose. See if there are any scratches that ought to be polished and buffed.

Clean your jewelry regularly. Wipe off your jewelry every few days but get your jewelry cleaned deeply every six to eight months to remove dirt and grime.

Store your jewelry properly. Store your jewelry in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and heat. Use a jewelry box with compartments or a jewelry organizer to keep your pieces separate and organized soi you don’t end up with tangled chains and kinks.

You also might want to consider getting your jewelry appraised every five years or so. You can get an informal verbal appraisal for very little money. In fact, at Bert Levi Family Jewelers, we do verbal appraisals for free. Drop by and we’ll be glad to give your jewelry a good once over for you!
