The Best Way to Sell Emeralds

Gold and diamonds. That’s what’s easy to sell, right?

You can go online and find a thousand articles telling you how to sell gold and diamonds.

However, what do you do when you have emeralds? What do you do when you have sapphires or pearls? From what you can find online, it’s almost like gems other than diamonds don’t matter!

Unless you want to buy them. Then, you find plenty about how perfect and beautiful and original they are, right?

Well, you can sell emerald jewelry but the key is knowing what you have. That’s why the very first thing to do when you want to sell emerald jewelry is to get an appraisal from a reputable gemologist to determine its true value. You can get a free verbal appraisal from me or one of my Gemological Institute of America Accredited Jewelry Professionals. That will give you an idea. You may consider a full, written appraisal depending on the verbal appraisal. This will help you understand its market value based on factors similar to the Four Cs for diamonds.

Once you know what you have, it’s time to sell the jewelry to a specialized jewelry buyer with expertise in emeralds. You accomplish this with research. You should look at local jewelers (and I sincerely hope you consider us if you want to sell emerald jewelry in San Diego) and research their reputation as buyers. There are also buyers online you can consider. Online platforms can offer access to a wider range of buyers, but selling in person at a reputable jewelry store allows for immediate evaluation and payment.

Your buyer should explain to you before you’ve done the deal that if you can wait, you should sell your emeralds to the person who will wear them or gift them. That will give you the most money. Thery should explain that the origin of your emerald can significantly impact its price, with Colombian emeralds generally considered the most valuable. They should be completely transparent with you, and you should be completely transparent with them in terms of any treatments your emerald has undergone.

If you need to sell emeralds in San Diego, I would love the chance to help you. Give me a call or stop by our La Jolla showroom. You’ll be glad you did.
