The Best Tips When You Sell Your Jewelry

If you’re selling your jewelry, your goal will be to get a fair deal, right? In order for that to happen, you should be prepared. I’ve written a number of blog posts like this one. I’m sure there’s duplicate information here but I know it makes sense to have a number of these posts because people aren’t likely to scroll through years’ worth of posts, right? I just want to make sure people have the information they need.

So, here are some tips for you.

Bring all your relevant paperwork to the jewelry buyer.

Bring certifications, appraisals, or gemstone certificates to help buyers understand the piece and potentially get a better price. I’m a jewelry buyer in San Diego and I can’t tell you how many times customers came to me with horror stories about tiny amounts offered only to find out they needed to bring their paperwork to the other buyers.

Research the value.

If you’re selling jewelry in San Diego, you can come to my showroom for a free verbal appraisal. We’ll consider the piece's condition, style, designer, and wearability. If you can’t get an appraisal, you should try to evaluate those things. You should also check the current market value online. Be careful to look for selling prices, not asking prices, in order to get an accurate picture of things.

Find a reputable jewelry buyer.

Look for a buyer with a good track record who uses clear, ethical practices. They should weigh and examine the item in front of you, not somewhere else. They should also tell you what they’re willing to pay item by item, not just a total amount without details about how they arrived at the price. Furthermore, you should get a receipt.

Prepare for negotiation when you sell jewelry.

Know your bottom price and be ready to counteroffer if the buyer asks you to accept less than your price. Keep in mind, of course, that your price may not be reasonable if you’re not accounting for their expenses and their profit margin. However, the point of negotiation is to arrive at a fair number.

I hope these tips are helpful. If you want to sell your jewelry in San Diego, we’re committed to offering a fair deal. Give me a call or drop by my La Jolla Showroom. You’ll be glad you did.
