Rolex loves superhero nicknames, doesn’t it?

Actually, no. It’s not the company that loves the nicknames. It’s the community of Rolex owners, dealers, and collectors that loves the nicknames.

Not just superheroes, either!

You’ve got plenty of beverages. Coke, Pepsi, Sprite, root beer… I could go on and on. But I’ll stick to the superheroes right now. Specifically, I’m going to forget about the Hulk and the Green Lantern (and the funny thing is the Green Lantern nickname is one of three for the same model, and Sprite is another of the three.) I want to talk about Batman (and Batgirl, I suppose) and now the Bruce Wayne.

The GMT Master a particularly loved watch when it comes to nicknames. Part of that is simply that the GMT Master and GMT Master II has sported bright colors and a two-tone bezel for most references from the very beginning back in 1955. Since the GMT rotating bezel is intended to differentiate nighttime and daytime, two tones makes a lot of sense. The two tones have resulted in many nicknames. Pepsi is blue and red, of course. Batman is black and blue.

And this new one, the reference 126710GRNR is black and grey, which has been dubbed the Bruce Wayne, presumedly because of the similarity to the Batman watch but with a more sedate and elegant feel. Perhaps the image of Batman’s alter ego wearing a business suit comes to mind. From a technical standpoint, the Bruce Wayne is identical to the Batman (or, for that matter, the Pepsi or the Batgirl.) It is manufactured with 904L steel, which Rolex dubs Oystersteel, and has 100m water-resistance.

The Bruce Wayne is a very high demand right now but I’m not convinced that’s just because it’s new. Already, a number of industry pundits are calling the 126710GRNR the new standard for the GMT Master II. It’s difficult to hazard a guess to the validity of that claim. If it’s true, all future references will be based on this one. Time will tell. One thing I have no problem saying is that the reference 126710GRNR is an absolutely stunning watch, something worthy of a great many accolades.
