Should You Do an Over-the-Top Proposal?

Couple kissing after engagenent,

They’re all the rage, aren’t they? You can see them in online video sites. Sometimes there’s a whole situation arranged sort of like a candid camera surprise where things get weirder and weirder until the big reveal when someone is down on one knee holding out a ring.

Sometimes there are proposal flash mobs. I’ve seen one where an entire marching band showed up to play at a public park and at the end cheerleaders held up the proposal banner. I don’t know if we can say that over-the-top proposals are standard now but they’re definitely increasing in popularity, right?

So, should you do it?

Whether you should do an over-the-top proposal depends on a number of things. First and foremost, you have to think about your partner. Consider your partner's preferences and what they might like. Is he embarrassed and uncomfortable by public displays of affection?

Well, he’s not going to be happy about an over-the-top display. On the other hand, maybe your girlfriend just loves big displays of affection. You should know your partner far better than anyone else, and your decision should be based on your partner’s personality over anyone else, even yours. Your partner will be the center of attention and you know better than anyone how that will make your partner feel.

You’re going to want to think about the proposal itself. A public proposal can be great for couples who love attention. However, public proposals can be difficult to control. There are more people involved. Every person involved is a wild card. You don’t know if the people at the next table over are in the middle of an argument. You don’t know if one person will be overly friendly and enthusiastic. You need to keep in mind public proposals have a measure of chaos no matter what and an over-the-top public proposal is even more chaotic.

The best thing to do is, unfortunately, the least romantic. That’s to talk to your partner ahead of time so that you can both do the planning. You may even hire a planner for it like you would for your wedding. A lot of people have a very quiet private proposal and then the public over-the-top proposal.

Whatever decision you make for your proposal, when it comes to the engagement ring, Bert Levi Family Jewelers would love to help. If you need an engagement ring in San Diego, give us a call or drop by our La Jolla Showroom. You’ll be glad you did, I can assure you.
