Should You Buy Antique Jewelry as an Investment

I’m not a financial advisor, so I don’t want you to think of me as a financial planner or anything like that. You should make investment decisions based on your personal financial situation as well as advice from an actual professional who can do a much better job that I can when it comes to offering you advice specific to your needs.

That said, I can answer the question if it’s phrased a little differently. Here goes. Does antique jewelry hold its value well compared to new jewelry?

That answer is yes.

Antique jewelry can increase in value over time, unlike new jewelry which can depreciate almost immediately. Why is that? Well, it’s like a new car. You lose a significant amount of value the moment you drive a new car off the lot. In the same way, a brand-new ring becomes a pre-owned ring immediately after purchase and there will be a period of time where the value is lower.

Antique jewelry is unique because of smaller production runs and decreasing commonness over time. Since it is also linked to a specific period in history, there is a very romantic timelessness to antique jewelry you don’t find as much in new jewelry.  This is true for unknown jewelry as well as some with brand legacy. Items from famous manufacturers like Cartier or Tiffany & Co. can increase in value due to their brand legacy and those who collect the brand itself.

There's a high demand for antique jewelry but antique jewelry won't have its markup significantly affected by the retailer and manufacturer. The market is established. Gold and diamonds are established in new jewelry, of course. However, the design and the rest are all up to the jeweler. There’s more volatility and less predictability.

So, if you want to buy jewelry and you’d like the jewelry to maintain as much value as it can while you enjoy wearing it or seeing someone you love wear it… Well, going for an antique or vintage item might be a great idea. If you’d like to drop by my showroom to take a look at my expansive collection of vintage jewelry, I’d love to see you. If you have any to sell, I’d love to help you with that as well. So get in touch. You’ll be glad that you did.
