Rolex was one of the first brands to make effective use of brand ambassadors. They call their brand ambassadors Rolex Testimonees. From the first Testimonee, Mercedes Gleitze, the first woman to swim the English Channel in 1927 to the newest group of testimonees from 2024, the Rolex Ambassador’s exemplify pinnacle performance and exceptionalism.
Sir Malcolm Campbell was a famous British race car driver and record-breaking land speed pilot. He was known as the UK's "Speed King” and was truly a legend in the world of motorsports. Campbell set many land speed records at Daytona Beach and the Bonneville Salt Flats. He was the first person to break the 300 miles per hour speed barrier. Campbell was a former military man but will always be remembered for his accomplishments with automobiles and speed.
Campbell used the same car, which he named Bluebird, for many of his record-breaking runs. However, his final record-breaking car was powered by a Rolls-Royce airplane engine. Campbell raced many different types of vehicles. He also won motorcycle races, including the London-to-Edinburgh reliability test three years in a row. Campbell was one of the few land speed record holders of his time to die of natural causes.
Campbell was a Member of the Military Division of the Order of the British Empire, which he received in 1919 for his service in World War I. That honor was expanded on February 21, 1931, when he was knighted by King George V. The knighthood came after Campbell set a land speed record of 245.73 miles per hour at Daytona Beach.
Sir Malcolm Campbell was the first Rolex Testimonee in motor sports, and his partnership with Rolex was a testament to the brand's commitment to speed and performance. Campbell's association with Rolex helped establish the brand's connection to motor sports, which continues today. Campbell's Rolex Oyster watch was waterproof and dustproof, and could withstand vibrations. He wore it during his speed record attempts and often reported back to Rolex on the watch performance.
