Rolex calls their brand ambassadors Testimonees. They really look for the best of the best across industries, sports, professions, and more. Is it any wonder they sought out Chuck Yeager for the role? Chuck Yeager was a US Air Force test pilot who was the first person to break the sound barrier. He was also the first person to fly more than twice the speed of sound.
On October 14, 1947, Yeager flew the Bell X-1 aircraft faster than the speed of sound. This was a major breakthrough that disproved the idea that aircraft couldn't fly faster than sound. In 1953, Yeager flew the Bell X-lA more than twice the speed of sound. Yeager was known for his willingness to work hard and outlearn others. Yeager was a World War II fighter ace and received the Congressional Medal of Honor. He also trained Gemini, Mercury, and Apollo astronauts.
Yeager became a brigadier general in the United States Air Force on August 1, 1969, with a date of rank of June 22, 1969. Yeager was promoted to brigadier general after serving as a colonel in the Air Force. Yeager was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1973. He retired from military service in 1975 with the rank of brigadier general.
Is it any wonder that Rolex wanted him?
When Yeager broke the sound barrier, he did it while wearing a Rolex. He was such a fan of his Rolex that he sent Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex, an autographed photo of the Bell X-1 (the test plane he piloted) and himself. It was years later, in the early 2000s that he became a brand ambassador, appearing in advertisements for the Rolex GMT Master II and the GMT Master Oyster Thunderbird.
