Maybe this can spur your thinking then. Some of the most unusual ways to propose marriage can be really fun. Some people get really adventurous like proposing in a hot air balloon. Some take to the air only sort of, skywriting the proposal. That’s exciting, too, isn’t it? I want to suggest my favorite unusual proposal, and it’s customizable, which makes it even better.
How about creating a scavenger hunt? You know how that works, right? One clue brings you to another clue which brings you to another and another. The last clue brings you to the proposal. Maybe you open a door and there’s the one you love there on one knee and holding out the ring. Maybe the final clue is a rebus, a picture puzzle, and you work it out to see it reads Will you marry me?
Scavenger hunts are fun because they contain interactive elements. They add an element of fun and discovery, where the partner has to solve clues to find the ring. Because you can tailor it to your relationship with things important to you and your partner; it’s even more exciting. If you and your partner enjoy the beach, there can be steps that happen there. Are you two movie fans? You can send your partner to a movie and the dialogue might provide a clue.
Let me give you three cardinal rules to make your scavenger hunt proposal perfect.
Make It Personal. Include inside jokes, nicknames, and shared memories in the clues. You can incorporate meaningful locations, too, like where you had your first date. Imagine a stop at the coffee shop where you two met and a drink waiting with the next clue?
Incorporate Friends and Family. There are lots of ways for this to work. They can be clue stops or they can be the big climactic end, all singing or spelling out the proposal, for example. You can give your partner a picture of your life with the people important to you both.
Be Authentic. Focus on being yourself and being honest about how you feel with your partner. Don’t make it a spectacle for everyone else. Don’t make it about impressing friends or family. Make it something to build excitement and joy for your partner, something your partner will love.
