For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a jeweler. Sure, it was unofficial when I was a child but with a jeweler grandfather and a jeweler father, it was written in the stars, so to speak. A third-generation jeweler looks at jewelry a little differently than most people. To me, jewelry is always about the relationships involved and not the materials used or the designs. So, in general, I think fashionable really just means whatever the couple involved wants.
However, let me give you some ideas about how your ring might fit into things. I’m an expert on rings, not fashion, so please don’t hold my feet to the fire here. In today’s world, it’s fair to say that the biggest risk for an engagement ring in a fashion sense is that it will appear too ostentatious.
Engagement rings can seem too showy if they are very large in design, have a very large diamond, or feature intricate and flashy designs. If they are so extravagant that they draw undue attention, that can be jarring. Also, if they don’t suit the wearer's lifestyle, that can be jarring. When the ring becomes more about its showy appearance than its sentimental value, it can be jarring.
So, when you want to think about your ring and fashion, keep some things in mind. First and foremost, the person you love. The most important factor is what the future spouse wants to wear, right? Think about what they wear now. Are they flashy? Are they more sedate? If they always wear slick designer clothes, a plain band with a small gem might not fit.

For the same reasons, if they’re far more sedate with their appearance, a multi-gem showpiece of a ring won’t fit. Keep in mind that an engagement ring is meant to be worn every day for life. In general, people ought to notice the engagement ring but it shouldn’t be the focal point of any outfit.
The key to this question is, like all jewelry, to remember that jewelry is important for what it commemorates far more than for what it is.
