Is Platinum Hard to Sell?

Woman holding platinum and diamond necklace, ring, and earrings.

For many years, platinum traded at a higher price than gold. Over the last few years, though, that has reversed. This has come about primarily because although platinum is far, far rarer than gold; its price is far more volatile. Platinum is a precious metal with a high economic value, however, and is comparable to gold. It's about thirty times rarer than gold, has a higher density, and is typically presented in purer form. Platinum's spot value has historically been more volatile than gold and silver due to industrial demand fluctuations. In the United States, platinum still represents a liquid asset and is still considered a hedge against inflation by many investment analysts.

Platinum is relatively easy to sell, although that will depend to an extent on what form it takes. Like gold and silver, it is always easiest to sell in gold or bullion form. Platinum coins are, in general, the easiest to sell. The quality and purity of officially minted coins is documented and that means dealers will typically pay based on the current market value. However, older or historically valuable coins may be worth more than the current market rate. Platinum bars issued by a government mint are generally as easy to sell as government-issued coins. However, bars from private smelters are more likely to be scrutinized.

Platinum is often used for men's jewelry because it is durable and can handle everyday wear without breaking. Platinum jewelry may be purchased just like gold, as metal to be recycled, or it may be purchased for resale at is, for inclusion into a vintage jewelry inventory.

Platinum is also often used in laboratories because it performs well with heat and can withstand corrosive chemicals. It isn’t as easy to sell platinum labware but that doesn’t mean it can’t be done. You just need a dealer who can handle large quantities and can verify the purity.

If you have platinum jewelry you’d like to sell, I’d love to help. At Bert Levi Family Jewelers, we dedicate ourselves to fair dealing, and we’d love the chance to show you what that means. Give us a call or just drop by the La Jolla showroom. You’ll be glad you did.
