Is It Okay to Upgrade an Heirloom Engagement Ring?

Jeweler modifying heirloom ring

You’d be surprised how often someone asks me this question. I can understand. Heirloom jewelry is important, and it carries with it significance that seems timeless. Jumping into modifications or changes isn’t an easy thing to do. I want to say first and foremost that everything I say here is my opinion. There’s no hard and fast rule. I have done a lot with heirloom jewelry, including just using the gold for an entirely different piece or using the gemstones in entirely different jewelry. But this isn’t about an heirloom brooch or an heirloom necklace.

Can you modify an engagement ring? First of all, from a practical standpoint, in almost every case you can modify any item of jewelry. So, I’m addressing this from a more emotional or, for that matter, almost moral point of view.  The bottom line is that it’s generally considered fine to upgrade an heirloom engagement ring. The key is that the ring should be upgraded respectfully. What that means might vary. Perhaps it means keeping the original stone and making modifications that enhance its style. Maybe it means replacing the stone and keeping everything else the same.

Ultimately, each situation is going to be different and preserving the items sentimental value for the family will require thought and consideration. If the family member who passed the ring down to you is still alive, you should have an open conversation about plans for the ring. Get thoughts and feedback. You should, in fact, have that conversation with any stakeholder. If, for example, you’re using your great grandmother’s ring, you should talk to your grandparents and your parents about what makes it significant.

A skilled jeweler can help you explore options to update the ring without compromising its integrity, such as changing the setting, adding accent stones, or resizing it to fit properly.

Armed with those ideas, you can talk with the people who deserve the conversation. Before making major alterations, discuss your plans with the family member who gifted you the ring to ensure they are comfortable with the changes.

If you need alterations on an heirloom ring, I would love to help you. Of course, if you’re looking for any kind of engagement ring in San Diego, I’d love to help you. Give me a call or drop by the La Jolla showroom. You’ll be glad you did.
