Rolex watches are known for retaining their value well, and some models can even appreciate value over time. Over the last several decades, it’s fair to say that Rolexes have retained value better than any other watches. Rolex watches depreciate slowly, and some even increase in value. Rolex watches have a high resale value in large part because of their history of producing high-quality watches. In addition, Rolex limits production numbers each year. That adds rarity, which affects depreciation.
But what does that mean?
It means you might have something to leave your children or grandchildren that has value. It may even mean in certain circumstances that you end up with more money down the road than you spent. I have to say that I don’t offer financial planning advice at all, and you should make decisions in concert with your own financial advisors.
Having said that, I would never buy a Rolex assuming an increase in value. Some say that Rolex watches are wise investments because they can outperform some traditional financial assets. I buy and sell Rolexes constantly but my business isn’t designed to buy at full price, hold the watch, and then sell it years from now. I buy at a fair wholesale price and then sell.
I think the appropriate way to approach the sale of a Rolex is to get something you love. It’s safe to assume when you sell the watch, it will be closer to what you paid for it than you expect. The key, though, is to buy what you will enjoy wearing. Buy a fine Swiss mechanical timepiece and think about it as that, not as dollar signs on your wrist. Enjoy the product for what it is, not for what you might sell it for later.
That’s my two cents. Hope you find it helpful. If you’d like to buy a pre-owned Rolex in San Diego, give me a call. I can talk to you about my inventory and also about finding something I don’t have. So reach out or drop by our La Jolla showroom. You’ll be glad you did.
