How to Effectively Negotiate When You Sell Your Jewelry

Writer: Bert LeviBert Levi

Jewelry Buyer in San Diego examining jewelry for sale.

Why in the world would I make this post when I hope you’ll sell to me? The answer isn’t complicated. The reality is that I want you to be a customer for many years, and that means I want experiences for you to be win-win in more ways that one. Yes, I think there’s a moral imperative to do the right thing. Yes, I believe that offering a fair price when I buy jewelry is the right thing. Yes to all of that from an ethical standpoint. I believe all that and have run the company that way for more than three decades.

But it’s also good business. Because I’m interested in having you as a customer for many years (or even like some customers, having multiple generations of customers); I’m not going to do anything to try to make a quick buck at your expense. So… here are ways to help you when the time comes to sell your jewelry. Use them on anyone who buys from you, even me. So, here you go. When negotiating the price of old jewelry, here are tips:

Know your bottom price.

You should go into the conversation knowing your bottom price, which means you need to understand the value of what you have. Get an appraisal if you need one. We do free verbal appraisals, too. Know your bottom price so you can make appropriate counter offers.

Be prepared to negotiate.

Don't accept the first price offered. Be ready to negotiate. Ask for a better price. This industry has a very long tradition of sole proprietors and, therefore, wiggle room in negotiations. Ask for a better price and see what happens.

Consider the emotional value.

This is a big one. Jewelry usually has sentimental worth that can't be measured in dollars and cents. This is all the more reason to negotiate for the best result possible.

Demand transparency

Pricing should be transparent. Less than reputable buyers will make an offer on the total number of items without providing a clear breakdown of value per item. Anyone who buys from you should make it clear why they offer what they offer.

There are some ideas for you. I hope they help you get the best deal you can get. If you are looking to sell jewelry in San Diego, get in touch. I can promise you we do all we can to offer a fair price and to leave you delighted with our service.
