Engagement rings have a very long history that dates back thousands of years. Rings were given in ancient times as not only a token of commitment but also as a way to prove a potential match had the resources to take care of the bride. Over the centuries, many aspects of rings have gained symbolic importance. Although times have changed, the symbolism can still help you to decide on a ring’s designs and components. I'm putting together a whole series on engagement ring symbolism I think you might enjoy. Until that's good to go, enjoy this post.
To combine gems for meaning on an engagement ring, you can choose gemstones that represent specific qualities or aspects of your relationship or what you want your relationship to be. For example, perhaps you met on a beach and so you choose blue-green gems to represent the water. Perhaps you want something more about the nature of relationships so you can choose gems that symbolize love, loyalty, commitment, or new beginnings. These can be incorporated with a central stone and accent stones. You can also make patterns for the meaning.
When combining gems for meaning. Take into account the individual gemstone meanings. You can research the symbolism behind different gemstones to find ones that resonate with your love story. Blue sapphires, for example, symbolize protection. Rubies symbolize passion. You can also think about how colors complement each other visually and whether they convey the desired message. You wouldn’t want fiery red rubies if you’re trying to display the friendship underlying your love. Consider where you want to place each stone on the ring. Where it goes emphasizes the meaning.
Here are some combinations to get you thinking…
Blue Sapphires and Diamonds: Diamonds symbolize forever and sapphires symbolize protection and loyalty. So, the meaning can express that the two of you protect each other. It can also suggest loyalty forever. I like thinking of it as the two of you protecting the commitment at all costs.
Rubies and Emeralds: Rubies represent passion. Emeralds represent new growth and new beginnings. So, together, they can represent a love that is vibrant and evolving.
Peridot and Diamonds: Peridot represents hope. So this combination suggests a relationship filled with unending optimism and a permanent positive outlook.
Of course, there’s no end to the possible combinations. If you’re looking for an engagement ring in San Diego, I’d love to help. I’m a third-generation jeweler and I’m committed to delighting my customers. Give me a call or just drop by the La Jolla showroom. You’ll be glad you did.
