How Does Jewelry Trade-In Work?

Writer's picture: Bert LeviBert Levi

Jewelry can sometimes be thought about as similar to cash. After all, precious materials are used in the manufacture of jewelry. Precious metals and gemstones are very liquid assets. If you have jewelry that you don’t wear anymore or you no longer want, it makes sense to convert those assets to cash when you have a purchase you’d like to make.

That’s true in most cases.

But if the purchase you want to make is different jewelry, I think you should start thinking of the jewelry you have no as a trade-in, just like if you wanted to buy a new car, you’d think of your current car as a trade-in. If you take store credit with a jeweler instead of cash, you’re very likely to get much better value.

There are many reasons people trade in jewelry. Sometimes, the inherit something that’s beautiful but in no way reflective of their style. So, they bring it to a jeweler and get something that works. Sometimes, a couple is very wise and they buy a modest engagement ring they can afford. Years later, their financial circumstances are different, and they want to upgrade to a bigger diamond or a more ornate design.

Sometimes, the jewelry they have is something special to them. They trade it in rather than sell it to a pawn shop or a gold buyer because they went to see it remain in a jeweler’s inventory. They want to imagine the ring or necklace brightening someone else’s life as well.

Another big aspect of trade-ins actually has to do with upgrades. Sometimes, people trade in only part of an item. Sometimes, for example, a person might trade in a Centerstone midnight-blue sapphire because they want a diamond on the ring instead. Sometimes, an engagement ring and a wedding band don’t match and someone wants to trade one in to get a match with the other.

There are many reasons to trade in jewelry when you want something new. If you have jewelry to sell in San Diego, come see us and find out how a trade in might work better for you.
