Engagement rings have a very long history that dates back thousands of years. Rings were given in ancient times as not only a token of commitment but also as a way to prove a potential match had the resources to take care of the bride. Over the centuries, many aspects of rings have gained symbolic importance. Although times have changed, the symbolism can still help you to decide on a ring’s designs and components. I'm putting together a series on engagement ring symbolism I think you might enjoy. For now, I hope this is helpful.
The design of an engagement ring can symbolize meaning in many ways including the gem used, the shape of the gem, the metal used, and the design of the metal. If you look at my blog, you’ll find plenty of discussion of the gems. Diamonds symbolize forever. Rubies symbolize passion. Emeralds symbolize growth and new beginnings. There’s a great deal of information available in the other posts so right now, I’ll focus on how the materials are used rather than the symbolism of the materials themselves.
The Shape of the Gem
The shape of the gem conveys meaning. The round cut is a classic shape that symbolizes unity, completion, wholeness, and eternal love. The round brilliant cut also gives you the most brilliance and sparkle. The princess cut is a modern shape that symbolizes strength, clarity, and love in partnership. The emerald cut represents sophistication, elegance, and tradition. You can see how the gem shape can influence the meaning. Other shapes have meaning, too.
The Design on the Metal
The ring can incorporate a symbol that conveys special meaning. An infinity symbol either etched into the ring or part of the band itself represents an unbroken, everlasting path together. A Celtic knot is an Irish symbol with a looping pattern and three points of representation such as life, death, and rebirth or past, present, and future This can be an etched design or the ring can consist of the endless knot entirely around the band. You can, of course, do other symbols like the tree of life or, for that matter, anything important to you as a couple.
This is just a brief overview but if you read over the other posts in this blog series, you’ll get some great ideas about how to design your engagement ring in a way that it conveys the things you find important in your relationship.
