Selling gold is all the rage, isn’t it? Although we aren’t necessarily hit with the same constant barrage of advertisements we lived through just a few years ago, there are still plenty of late-night commercials, bus stop promises, and post card mailers. We’re still confronted by big WE BUY GOLD signs at mini mall after mini mall.
I’m not a big fan of the gold buying industry. Well, let me rephrase that. I don’t have any problem at all with the gold buying industry itself. However, most of the people involved aren’t interested in giving you a fair price. I’m not suggesting there’s dishonesty. Most gold buying stores in mini-malls, for example, are staffed by people who just weight the gold and then make the offer their computer screens say to make. They aren’t doing anything unethical. However, I don’t think the prices offered by those places are fair.
This is why I think you ought to get your jewelry appraised. At Bert Levi Family jewelers, we offer free verbal appraisals. Such an appraisal will give you a good idea of the gold value of your jewelry as well as any additional value involved from gems or from the craftsmanship.
A verbal appraisal from us or from another jeweler will give you an idea of the value of your items so you can see right away if the amount you’re offered makes any sense. The other critical issue as far as I’m concerned is that the appraisal will let you know if there is value that goes beyond the gold. How much are your gems worth? What about the design?
A kinked or broken gold chain might only be worth the weight of the precious metal but not everything is just scrap gold! Get someone to take a look. When it comes to selling valuables, information is priceless. If your jewelry surprises you with really exceptional value, you might want to get a written appraisal for a deeper look but for the most part, a verbal appraisal will make selling your items easier on you.
