Stainless steel Rolex Milgauss with orange and black and white dial.

The Rolex Milgauss was designed for people working in power plants and research laboratories back in the early 1950s. The idea was to create a watch that could withstand highly magnetic environments, The point was to create a watch where accuracy would not be affected by strong electromagnetic fields. At the time the Rolex Milgauss was developed, there was no watch that could accomplish that.

In order to accomplish the resistance to gauss (the measurement of magnetism) this Rolex model was powered by a special movement. It contained anti-magnetic alloys and the movement was encased with an iron Faraday cage. Faraday cages are used to block magnetism and radio waves. For example, they are used MRI scan rooms. The Faraday cage prevents external signals from altering the magnetic resonance data received from the patient.

On the Rolex Milgauss, this unique feature protected the movement against static electrical fields, making precision possible even in extreme electromagnetic conditions. The Milgauss became instantly popular. Over the years, additional features such as leaf-shaped hands giving way to Mercedes style hands and then stick-shaped hands. The Milgauss was discontinued in 1987 and then started produced again starting in 2007. The 2007 model had a self-winding feature and water resistance.  In 2023, the Milgauss was discontinued again.
