I’m a third-generation jeweler and I’ve helped countless couples with their engagement rings. Although it’s a very firmly entrenched tradition that engagement rings have diamonds, it’s not a hard fast rule at all. Not everyone wants a diamond. Not everyone wants to do what everyone else does. In some cases, that means a unique design rather than a ring from one of the big box stores. In some cases, it means choosing a colored center stone. For some, it means using colored stones to accent the diamond center stone. Here is a quick look at three of the most popular possibilities.
Sapphires come in many different colors although the deep, midnight blue color is the most common. A midnight blue sapphire can provide an almost mysterious significance to an engagement ring, something that catches the eye and holds attention. From a symbolism standpoint, midnight blue sapphires represent serenity, and that’s a fantastic quality in a ring, right?
Rubies are actually sapphires, just the red variety. They symbolize passion and romance. Because they’re sapphires, they are very durable stones, almost as unbreakable as a diamond. Diamonds may be forever but rubies are pretty close to forever as well.
Emeralds are very elegant green gems, and they can range from light green to a very lovely and deep forest green. They symbolize spring and new beginnings. That makes them a great choice for engagement rings, doesn’t it? One thing to keep in mind is that an emerald is one of the most brittle gemstones. If your fiancé is in a physically active, hands-on career, you may want to consider something more durable.
One of the most exciting options, of course, is to use a diamond center stone with surrounding stones that bring color. The important thing, though, is that a ring ought to represent the relationship, and so you need to choose what works for you.
