Are There Advantages to Lab Grown Diamonds?

Image of a round brilliant cut diamond on a black background.

Lab grown diamonds are formed in carefully controlled artificial environments designed to replicate the natural conditions that create diamond in the molten mantle beneath the Earth’s crust. Lab created diamonds are made from the exact same natural element, carbon, as diamonds. They are chemically identical to natural diamonds. In fact, the only actual difference between a lab diamond and a mined diamond is the gem’s origin.

Lab grown diamonds are indistinguishable from mined diamonds unless very specialized equipment is used. You can’t see the difference without that equipment. They’re simply the same thing. They have the same physical characteristics. They’re cut by master gem cutters in the same way and they have the same “forever” durability of a natural diamond. In fact, the term “natural diamond” is a somewhat silly term because lab diamonds are real, natural diamonds but formed differently.

Is a tree grown on a tree farm any less a tree than one grown in a forest?

Lab diamonds give you the same fire, scintillation, and sparkle that you find in a mined diamond. They look just as beautiful. In most cases, a laboratory diamond is very likely the right choice for a couple just starting out. Why might you decide against it, though? Well, right now, mined diamonds are more valuable if they’re resold.

If the resale value of your diamond is important to you, you’ll want to think about that. Others might decide against a lab grown diamond for status reasons, emotional reasons, or symbolic reasons. Whatever you decide, the choice, like your marriage, belongs to you! At Bert Levi Family Jewelers, we sell engagement rings in San Diego and across the world that have lab grown diamonds as well as natural, earth-mined diamonds. Drop us a line or give us a call. We’d love to see if we can help you with your special day.
