An Overview of Diamond Shapes for Engagement Rings

I’ve probably covered most of these in different blog posts but I thought you might enjoy having a succinct overview of the possibilities right here in front of you. Many (but not all) other gems can be cut into these shapes. Emeralds, for example, look best with the fewest facets because of natural inclusions being far more visible. Emeralds are also brittle, requiring careful cutting. Sapphires, on the other hand can usually be cut into whatever shape a diamond can.

Some of the most popular diamond shapes for engagement rings include the round diamond, which is the classic choice. In fact, if you picture a diamond ring, you’re probably picturing a round diamond in a Tiffany setting. This shape is especially popular because more than any other shape, it allows a diamond to catch the light most effectively.

A princess cut has a more geometric look with sharp edges and a square shape. The shape makes it seem more modern. Oddly, the rectangular shape of an emerald cut diamond appears timeless rather than modern. The cushion cut seems like an old world cut, a square shape with rounded corners. All three of these cuts have an elegant and sophisticated flair to them. Shapes somewhere between the round brilliant diamonds and the more sophisticated cuts, you’ll find the oval diamond. On an engagement ring, it makes the fingers appear slimmer.

The radiant diamond is a modified square shape that's a hybrid of the emerald cut and the round diamond. The marquise diamond has an elongated, pointed shape. It’s somewhat similar to a football shape and looks larger than its actual carat weight. The Asscher diamond shape is similar to the emerald cut, square with larger step facets. The so-called “fancy” shapes aren’t about the diamond’s ability to catch light but just for the symbolism of the shape. Pear-shaped diamonds, tear-drop diamonds and heart-shaped diamonds are examples of these.
