An Engagement Ring Too Showy…

Diamond engagement rings on a white background.

Is it possible for your engagement ring to be too showy? The answer is pretty clear. Absolutely! Of course the answer is also clear. Absolutely not!

Yes, I do this sometimes.

So, bear with me just a moment. You may be surprised because I don’t think the answer really has much to do with how the ring looks at all. I can’t claim to be any sort of expert on life in general but I can tell you without any hesitation or reservation that I’m an expert on engagement rings. One of the things about being an expert on engagement rings is understanding how they impact young couples.

So… how does that affect the question of showiness? All right, here goes…

If you like it showy, tell the rest of the world to shut up and enjoy what you like. The ring is about you and your engagement and nobody else. Will it be ostentatious? Maybe. Will some people think that you’re just being showy? Maybe. Do you plan on all of the people who might judge you moving in and spending their lives in your living room? The relationship is yours. For some people, showy might be a half-carat diamond. For others, it might be a two-carat diamond. For others, it might be a twenty-five-thousand-dollar ring. Buy the ring you want, not the ring other people say you should.

But…

It can be too showy if you spend money you shouldn’t, and I mean this sincerely. At Bert Levi Family Jewelers, we always do all we can to keep young couples from spending more on an engagement ring than they should. To me, starting out the marriage on good financial footing is the most important thing a couple can do. Nearly every survey done about marriages that get into trouble cites financial problems as a significant issue. To me, getting a reasonable ring and upgrading it as your financial wherewithal improves is a far better idea.
